Poetry Essay #2 (14)

  1. Alisa, the aspect of your presentation I enjoyed most was your two poetry samples, just because I am reasonably familiar with both. In “Identity Card”, there are so many levels of connections with your author and The Kite Runner. From discrimination of race and ethnicity to giving the oppressed a rightful voice to condemn others, the themes and ideas of both the poem and novel circle around the oppressed vs. the oppressors—both from the oppressed point of view. I remember using this poem in our synthesis paper when talking about the aspect of survival as well, and I think bits and pieces of that also connect with your chosen novel.

In “Leda and the Swan”, the connection I first saw between it and your novel was not as clear. When you highlighted the abuse of power at the end of your first poetry essay however, I can definitely find ways to connect the two works thematically past their common topic of rape. Yet the deeper and more embodying theme is the loss of innocence, a universal theme that glistens from one literary work to another. Both poems you chose had heavy connections with the novel, and I wish you would have emphasized “Leda and the Swan” with just as much weight as you did for “Identity Card”. Overall, your presentation was wonderful—as usual—and you showed a rock-solid knowledge of the works and author you picked to research. Thank you for the adept analysis and summary of a normally required senior English book!
